Houston PD Arrests 75 for Felony DWI in Two Months

Despite nationwide drunk driving rates falling to historic lows in recent years, many police departments are still on high alert for inebriated drivers in their jurisdictions. Here in Houston, 75 people were arrested on felony DWI charges in the months of November and December, 2016. A number of the arrests took place over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday weekends.

While a DWI is typically a misdemeanor for the first two offenses in Texas, many of the suspected drunk drivers were arrested on their third or fourth offense, hence the felony charges.  Others received felony charges due to other circumstances, such as having a child in the car or being accused of intoxicated manslaughter.

While some of these accused drunk drivers may well have been inebriated behind the wheel, it’s important to remember that all of these people are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. It’s quite possible that some of these people were falsely accused of drunk driving due to errors made by law enforcement officers. Because cops are trained to err on the side of caution when it comes to drunk driving, they sometimes mistakenly arrest people on DWI charges who have not been drinking and driving.
