If you or someone you know is accused of committing a crime there are several things to keep in mind when selecting a criminal defense attorney.
First, how experienced is he or she? You don’t want to be their first case ever, ideally. You want someone who has been “at it” for years knows the ins-and-outs of the system well, and has formed a working relationship with the judge and court staff– that’s a good thing.
Also, take note whether or not the potential criminal defense attorney has argued cases similar to yours in the recent past. Make a list of questions and concerns, a knowledgeable criminal defense attorney will be able to answer every one of your questions. As you’d imagine, lawyers have different specialties. Some focus on DWI cases while others handle family law matters like divorces. Find out a lawyer’s specialty and their recent track record to see if you think they’d be an appropriate fit for your needs.
Money is also a consideration. What are the costs and fees associated with a particular criminal defense attorney and can you afford his or her services? Find out/discuss prices up front.
Do you see yourself getting along with them, personally? Trust your intuition. A good lawyer should be able to explain the charges against you as well as the consequences you could face easily and without hesitation. You should feel comfortable talking with him or her about your case and any details that may make you feel ashamed of your situation.
